“Say, it is Monday, and you write a very bad draft, but if you keep on trying, on Friday, words, phrases appear almost unexpectedly.”

– Elizabeth Hardwick

Advanced Fiction

Writer’s block. Narrators trapped inside their own heads. Stories with intriguing beginnings—but no clear ending. These are a few of the problems fiction writers may face.

In this class, you’ll be invited to complain constructively—to identify what, exactly, is keeping you from finishing your fiction projects. We’ll study:

    • point-of-view
    • structure
    • tone
    • pacing
    • detail

On the first afternoon, we’ll study craft and practice writing techniques. Then, overnight, you’ll complete a piece of short fiction. On the second afternoon, you’ll formulate your burning question about your writing—and hear your piece read aloud, anonymously. You’ll leave the workshop with actionable information about how to approach your next draft.

Non-native speakers of English are welcome.
