The Short Story

  • “For me, the Short Story weekend was fruitful. I learned the elements of a short story, as well as a new way of giving concise feedback. I also liked the atmosphere of energy, freedom, and open-mindedness. The feeling was nonjudgmental and inspiring.”

  • “The highlight of the two days was being able to formulate a short story in a few hours. Also: having the privilege of experiencing diverse creative voices and narratives shared by the other participants. Comfortable venue, passionate and knowledgeable facilitator—a useful and exciting learning experience.”

  • “What I like about the short story as a form: that it’s concrete—doesn’t go into unnecessary information. Unexpectedly, I got something useful out of one of the prompts. It’s material I want to use later on.”

  • “To be honest, I am more of a novel reader than a short-story reader. At least I was before the course. I preferred novels because I believed it gave you greater depth to characters and plot, creating a world to fully immerse yourself in. However, I now see that a good short story is capable of producing this same effect. I like the pace that a short story moves at, the resolution not far from the conflict. (more…)

  • “I learnt something I already partly knew: that I tend to have too many characters. But now I have learnt it! Also, it was refreshing to part of the dynamic of a group. Even if we write quite regularly, and have been writing for some time, it is very easy to get into a rut. Thank you for a rewarding workshop.”

  • “What I like about the short story as a form: the way a reader can be transported into a different world and experience, if ever so briefly. What I got from the workshop was a deeper appreciation for the different sections of a true story. Was also surprised that I could geek out so much on the subject and topics!”

  • “I learned very interesting writing techniques that I never thought could possibly exist. And I was surprised by the reaction to my short story. I was incredibly nervous before my story was read—but I could see people liked my piece and even imagined different paths for my main character. That was a fantastic experience; it made me proud and happy that I hadn’t given up on writing the story the night before.”

  • “I learned the structure of a traditional self-contained short story, from conflict to development to resolution (and all the important ingredients in between). The writing exercises and the valuable, non-judgmental feedback were probably the best things about the course.

Writing a story overnight was daunting! But it was also enjoyable, the process itself but also writing to meet a deadline. (more…)
