Writing Memoir

  • “What, exactly, did I learn at the ‘Writing Memoir’ workshop? So much! I basically knew nothing about writing. It was a great group and the pieces were really enjoyable and helpful. The handout was also extremely helpful with the assignment and for future writing. I never knew where to begin. Now I know. The highlight was maybe the satisfaction I experienced from winning my internal battle and finishing–against all odds–a story. It was exhilarating and fulfilling!”

  • “I liked ‘Writing Memoir’ a lot because it was involving, touching, and funny. I learned how to structure a memoir, and I learned some ‘rules’ that can be followed in the process of developing the work.

The texts the instructor chose to guide us were absolutely beautiful. I liked the way she explained everything: by extrapolating the essence of the message behind the words. This let us reflect on the work, and at the same time, it inspired us.”

  • “I was such a lovely, supportive environment to give and receive feedback. Also–strawberry Oreos…so good!

I really enjoy these workshops. The instructor us great and the content is very high-value. It’s a great way to spend a weekend, totally nerding out and indulging in writing. I learn something new each time I come, and I leave with a renewed sense of vigor/urgency for my creative writing. Thanks so much for providing all your students this environment.”

  • “I now have the sense of direction I need when writing memoir. But if there’s anything I learned at the workshops that I will remember for the rest of my life, it’s this: good memoir needs moments of reflection.

The highlight of the workshop was the moment my piece was read aloud and people responded to it. Usually I am my only reader; it’s exciting to hear what other people read into my writing.”

  • “I skipped two major dance events over the weekend to take part in the ‘Writing Memoir’ workshop. Don’t regret the decision. The workshop is life-changing and highly recommended.”

  • “What a terrific workshop! I am urban planner and do not – rather did not – write. So, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed myself at the weekend. This is what I thought (in a website-quotey way):

This was my first experience of a writing workshop and as a complete beginner I was a bit apprehensive about signing up. But I was persuaded on the recommendation of a good friend who had attended previous workshops. I am so glad I let myself be persuaded.

I learnt about memoir writing and more specifically personal essay form and style. I discovered the joy of writing freely and heard some practical advice on various prompts and practical ways to get writing.

The instructor created a safe and relaxed environment in which to share our writing and I found the workshop instructive and enlightening. But I also found it altogether uplifting, which was a delightful surprise.”

  • “Thank you for the amazing and professional job you did this weekend. I’ve attended a few writing workshops before, and none of them even come close to comparing to the professionalism and atmosphere of this one. Each writer was accepted, protected, heard equally, and celebrated – not an easy thing to do in a room full of different folks and personality types! Masterful.”

  • “The highlight of the workshop was hearing the instructor read the personal essays and hearing all the feedback. That was so interesting. And it was interesting, too, that everybody had something important to say.”
