Writing About Food

  • “It was a proactive weekend with a lot of inspiration. The highlight was the actual writing, of course, the creation. I realised that I can write without overthinking. Thank you for introducing me this skill.”

  • “What surprised me about the class?
How incredibly free-flowing, engaging and entertaining it was. The instructor really added a whole other level to running a workshop. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Where is my favorite place to write?
I am still experimenting with this one. Some days i can sit in a cafe and just get lost in time. And other times i get there, order a drink, and can’t wait to leave. Sitting curled up in bed or writing on the beach has been really nice, but it gets uncomfortable on the spine, and after a while, that becomes a distraction.

Thanks for giving me a reason to come to this incredible city.”

  • “Before the workshop, I had no idea about all the different forms of food writing. It was encouraging to discover that I’m not ‘forced’ to write blogs or cookbooks (two forms I don’t particularly feel drawn to), but that there is a host of ways I can write about my favourite subject.

It’s a nice and comforting feeling to be in a room of strangers with whom you already know that you share a common interest. This is particularly true for an introvert who usually shirks away from such things! There was an instant sense of community in the room.”

I really enjoy the instructor’s teaching style, which is very engaging. Being around someone who is so passionate and knowledgeable about reading and writing is certainly contagious. You don’t just learn at the workshops, you walk away feeling inspired, renewed, and ready to start writing.”

  • “I learned that something as basic and primal as eating is really useful in terms of giving the reader vivid sensory impressions. Again, the workshop confirmed that for me that the writing always goes better when I let my feelings and memories do the talking.

I think I was the only one in the group who didn’t have much knowledge about food-related topics. But I liked that!  It was challenging, and in the end, I felt able to grow more.”

  • “The selection of readings was delightful and enriching. One of my main discoveries was fictionalized memoir. I love it!

Thank you for such a delightful workshop. I spent a marvelous weekend doing things I really love to do: eating, writing, talking to wonderful people :).  I am already thinking about next year’s!”

  • “The class helped me to understand that one can start by writing about even the most common things—even popcorn can be a good starting point for what one has to say. How did it feel to be in a room full of writers? I could feel the electricity in the air and it was inspirational to be in a room with so many other people that feel the same way as I do about writing—and food.”

  • “At this workshop, it became clear how the writing comes alive when food is a vehicle for telling a story. Here, the writer is taught in a very hands-on, practical way. One feels free to open up—and ready to hear the work and opinions of others.”

  • “I really enjoyed the ‘Writing about Food’ weekend; it gave me a new perspective on food writing. I’d been thinking of writing personal stories that resolved in a recipe, but I wasn’t sure how to go about it. The weekend gave me ideas and direction.

The beautiful array of foods on the table was brilliant; it kept us nourished throughout the 4 hours that we spent at the workshop—and showcased the fact that food is something to be shared.”
